On June 17th of 2006, 24 people gathered at the former Camp Shawondossee camp site and dedicated a monument declaring to all who pass by that this ground was for many years a summer camp operated by the Boy Scouts of America.
The idea of placing a marker of some kind was brought up by former staff member Joe Pokora of Grand Rapids.
Jon Anderson of Cadillac (formerly of Grand Rapids) started a fund drive and received enough cash contributions from former staffers and in-kind donations to make the monument a reality.
Permission was obtained from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the ranger of Duck Lake State Park to place the 1500 pound granite marker on the steps of the formed dinning hall overlooking Duck Lake.
